How to Choose the Right Cigar Cutter for You

Choosing the right cigar cutter is an important decision for cigar aficionados. Different types of cutters can have a huge impact on the flavor, aroma and draw of your cigar. Whether you prefer a guillotine cutter, punch cutter, v-cutter or double blade cutter, it is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each type before making a decision.

Guillotine Cigar Cutter

Using a Guillotine

This is one of the most popular options available. This cutter uses two sharp blades to create a straight, clean slice through the cap. When using this, you should only remove a small portion of the cap (no more than a few millimeters). When in doubt, cut less not more. You can always cut off more of the cap, but you can’t put it back on!

Here are a few pros and cons of using this type of cutter:

Pros

  • Extremely easy to use
  • Most versatile- can be used on any shape
  • Very recognizable design

Cons

  • Potential for cutting too much, destroying wrap and providing an overly airy draw
  • Tends to release loose filler into your mouth
  • If dull, it can tear the cap quite a bit

Using a Punch

Another extremely popular option is a cigar punch. You can usually find this type of cutter attached to a butane lighter. The punch simply pokes a hole in the cap, allowing you to draw from the stogie.

Here are a few pros and cons of the punch:

Pros

  • Widely available- usually attached to a lighter
  • No debris to dispose of
  • Prevents loose tobacco from getting into the smoker’s mouth

Cons

  • Can only be used on certain shapes and sizes of cigar (i.e. robusto, corona)
  • Saliva can clog hole, preventing a solid draw
  • May provide a limited draw

Using a V-Cut

While not as recognizable, the v-cut is my favorite type. The design is similar to a guillotine- the main difference being the shape of the blade. The v-cut takes a v-shaped chunk from the cap instead of a straight slice. This provides a predictable cut with a solid draw.

Here are a few pros and cons of the v-cut:

Pros

  • No chance of cutting too much from the cap
  • Won’t clog from saliva
  • Most balanced draw

Cons

  • Can only be used on certain shapes and sizes of cigar (i.e. robusto, corona)
  • Tends to release loose filler into your mouth

Cutting your cigar with a guillotine or v-cut

  1. Locate the cap on the cigar (note that some rare shapes don’t require a cut)
  2. Open the cutter and place 1-3 millimeters of the cap into the insert
  3. Slowly close down on the blades until fully sliced
  4. Open the blades over the ash tray to discard debris

Using a punch

  1. Ensure the punch is nice and sharp
  2. Locate the center of the cap
  3. Firmly press the punch into cap, pushing all the way to the base of the punch
  4. Twist and gently scoop with the punch, leaving a hole in the cap

Cutting a cigar is not complicated but I guess it’s not as simple as I thought. I liked to use a guillotine cutter and felt I was doing a good job but now I’m linking the cigar punch better. It wastes less of the actual cigar.

It’s worth investing in a good cutter. Remember that a bad cut will ruin a good cigar, and it doesn’t take a lot of ruined cigars to add up to the cost of even a very elegant cutter. HOW TO LIGHT A CIGAR Lighting a cigar is not like lighting the tip of a cigarette or the wick of a candle–it takes longer.
